Tips for making an effective application

Before making an application, we recommend reading the Recruitment Role Profile Form. This can be found by clicking the 'Job Description/Role Profile' link beneath each job advertised.


Recruiting managers will be looking for evidence that you meet all of the essential criteria listed in the person specification and, ideally, some or all of the desirable criteria.

Therefore, it is important that you read the role profile carefully and create your application in such a way that it clearly demonstrates how your skills and experience meet those outlined in the person specification.

In order to make fair and consistent assessments, recruiting managers are only able to use the information provided in the application form and supporting documents (if accepted) to make short-listing decisions. A recruiting manager will frequently have over 50 applications to assess. Therefore, it’s important that you don’t assume they will be able to infer that you have relevant skills from your current and previous roles. In order for your application to stand out, we recommend that you specifically address each of the criteria stated in the person specification by providing relevant evidence.

You may be asked within your application form to complete a statement for each of the key criteria selected from the person specification (please note: this application form type does not allow you the opportunity to upload any additional documents as it is intended for applicants to submit all relevant details against each criteria). The statements are designed to provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate how your qualifications, experience and training are relevant to the post for which you are applying. Remember to include specific evidence or examples to support your application.

The 'Additional Information' section of the application form allows you the opportunity to add any other relevant information you wish to use in support of your application.

If the application form type allows supporting documentation to be uploaded, try to provide clear examples wherever possible as to how you meet the key criteria from the person specification. for example, if one of the essential criteria is experience of managing people it would be helpful to give examples of work experience where you have had line management responsibility including the size of the team managed.

You can do this on your application in the free text 'Additional Information' section, in a cover letter, or on a separate document uploaded as part of your application. you may also want to upload a CV to outline your education and work history.

Please do not insert URLs for other web sites in fields on the application form in lieu of requested information as this will not be accepted as evidence of meeting the specific criteria. You may use URLs in your supporting documentation statement.

Supporting Documents

If the application form type for the vacancy you are applying for allows the attachment of supporting documents, they do not have to be supplied but may enhance the information provided in the main body of the application e.g. a CV or supporting statement.

Please do not upload more documents than are necessary for your application, for example:

  • As copies of your qualification certificates would be obtained on appointment, it is not necessary to upload them at application stage.
  • Examples of publications may be requested by the interview panel following short-listing so it is not necessary to upload entire publications. However publication lists for academic positions (either as a separate document or as part of a CV) are encouraged.
  • Testimonies from referees as we approach referees independently.


When providing details of referees please name people who can be contacted to provide a reference with regards to your suitability for the job. At least one should be your current or last employer or (in the case of students your supervisor). Personal references from friends or family members cannot be accepted. Please provide a current email address for each referee.

We will contact your referees and our e-recruitment system will automatically remind referees if we don't receive the information back. Please ensure that your referees are aware they will be asked to provide information about you.
